Course Correction on Personal Goals

On January 1, I wrote about personal goals I set for myself for the first half of 2014.  Here they are to recap:

  1. Complete Miami Half Marathon
  2. Complete South Beach Triathlon
  3. Complete a Coursera course related to BrightGauge
  4. Learn the Python programming language
  5. Read UX Book on Microinteractions
  6. Write 65 blog posts for this blog!
  7. Lose 8 pounds
  8. Lower my golf handicap index by 2 strokes

So far, I’ve completed the half marathon, skipped the triathlon and I’m behind pace a little bit on the rest!!!  What’s interesting is how fast things can change in a few short months.  For me, my personal plans (travel, work schedules, etc) changed early in the year in a way I couldn’t predict. I was introduced to new ideas that I wanted to learn about and my brother and I decided to only publish two blog posts a week.  All within the first 45 days of the year…

Fortunately, having started and still building a small company for the past 3 years, change is truly the only constant I’ve been exposed to in my professional life.   External changes are not excuses to miss goals or targets but more a lesson that we all need to take a step back re-evaluate our goals periodically.  Only then can we make a course correction on our tactical plans if needed.

Since these are personal goals, I know the higher level goals are to live an active life, continue to educate myself, and enjoy hobbies as much as time permits.  So I readjusted and revised my goals to the following 5 for the next 3 months.  They’ve very close to the original 8 fortunately!

  1. Weekly training routine for summer triathlons
  2. Complete a Coursera course related to BrightGauge
  3. Write 24 blog posts for this blog
  4. Lose 6 pounds
  5. Lower my golf handicap index by 1 more stroke

Hope you are off to a great start on your goals in 2014!
