Two Key Roles A Business Must Have For Growth

I just finished Rocket Fuel: The One Essential Combination That Will Get You More of What You Want from Your Business by Gino Wickman and walked away with so many great insights that it has moved up in my list of top books I’m recommending.  Special thanks to my cousin Gabe for the recommendation.

The author, Gino Wickman, who also wrote another one of my top favorite business books Traction, shares some insights based on his 25+ years of experience in business consulting where he has identified that the most successful companies have both a “Visionary” and an “Integrator” in their most senior management.  He goes on to explain that when you have both roles working well together that it can turn into “Rocket Fuel” and the company can blast off into high growth.

What I love about the book is that Gino dedicates two chapters and a simple test of 20 questions to help you identify whether you are a visionary or an integrator.  Once you figure out which role you are, he shares how you can work best with your counterpart and if you don’t have one, he shares how you can find one.

This book hit home for me because at BrightGauge Brian is our Visionary and I play the Integrator role.  Both roles are equally important in order for the organization to experience rapid growth but it’s not until the two roles are identified and accepted by the individuals that the true magic can happen.  My favorite quote of the book sums it up perfectly:

“The visionary and the integrator, one sees the future and the other makes it happen”

This couldn’t be more accurate for how we work at BrightGauge.  Brian and I have always “divided and conquered” our work but we are truly hitting our stride with Brian managing the Product Team (vision) and me managing the Growth Team (integrator).  With this division of responsibility we have been fortunate to have experience rapid growth but more importantly work more harmoniously together.

If you are a business owner, or even a team lead, I highly recommend checking out the book to help you determine whether you are a visionary or an integrator, and then find your counterpart so you can make Rocket Fuel for your business.
